The two common techniques for used in the preparation of carved signs in routing and sandblasting. The budget for using these two techniques is more or less the same but the effects may vary to an extent. The choice is based on the most suitable option that caters to the needs of the campaign. The materials for creating signs through these methods also play a role. The materials used in general are cedar, extira, redwood and high density urethane.
Sandblasting of carved signs is done with the use of a thick area material since the images and text are elevated in this method. Embossing is done the after process of sandblasting is completed with the help of a stencil. The final task is to paint the remaining area according to the instructions of the customer.
Carved signs that use the technique of routing differ in the sense that the graphics and text are etched into the sign that has a flat surface background. Computer technology comes into the picture as a CNC router performs the task of providing the graphics and inserting the text on the carved signs.
Carved signs that are used in home or commercial uses need to be of the highest quality to function for long duration. The best known quality of wood for this purpose is the cedar that is similar to redwood but in a lighter color shade. They do not rot easily and hence make for ideal outdoor signs. They are commonly used at external locations such as a resort or a station. Redwood is another type of wood that is rich in color and offers resistance against warping and splitting. They provide attractive looking signs and do not undergo wear and tear easily.
Carved signs can also be made of extira that is a synthetic form of wood that does not get affected by water. This makes it better than other wood materials that absorb water easily and get corroded. Extira is perfect for signs placed in locations that undergo extreme seasonal changes since it has weather resistant qualities.
SignFoam or High density urethane is another synthetic material that provides the durability and toughness that is required to make long lasting carved signs. It remains unaffected by different harmful elements that wood is usually susceptible to. The phenomenon of splitting, warping and rotting that occurs in normal wood types is not seen in the case of high density urethane.
